Drawing Medieval Armor: Tips for Beginners

Medieval armor has been a source of fascination for many people for centuries. Whether you are a die-hard history buff or just a casual admirer of the medieval period, mastering the art of drawing medieval armor is a skill that can bring great joy and satisfaction. Drawing armor from the medieval period is not only a great way to learn more about the history and art of the time, it can also be a highly rewarding creative activity.

Before you begin drawing your own medieval armor, it is important to understand certain basics of the craft. The most important thing to remember is that armor is not a simple, flat object like a shield. Armor is made up of several different components that fit together to protect the wearer. These components include the gorget, pauldrons, vambraces, couters, rerebraces, cuisses, poleyns, and greaves. Understanding the function of each component and how it fits into the overall armor design is essential for creating a realistic looking piece.

When beginning to draw the armor, start with the gorget. The gorget is the part of the armor that covers the neck and shoulders. It is important to draw the gorget with the correct shape, as it will be the foundation for the rest of the armor. Draw the gorget in a curved shape that follows the contours of the neck and shoulders. Next, draw the pauldrons which are the large shoulder plates. These should be drawn in an oval or rectangular shape and should overlap the gorget slightly.

Adding Details

Once the basic shape of the armor has been established, it is time to add the smaller details. Draw the vambraces and couters which are the arm guards. These should be drawn in a curved shape that follows the contour of the arm. Next, draw the rerebraces which are the smaller arm guards. These should be drawn in a more intricate pattern. Finally, draw the cuisses, poleyns, and greaves which are the leg guards. These should be drawn in a more complex pattern to give the armor an authentic look.

When adding details to the armor, remember to keep it simple. Draw the details in a way that is easy to understand and that looks realistic. Avoid adding too many unnecessary details or patterns, as this will make the armor look cluttered and confusing. The details should also be drawn in a way that will enhance the overall design, not detract from it.

Finishing Touches

Once the armor is completed, it is time to add some finishing touches. Draw the rivets and other details that will give the armor a more realistic look. Add any emblems or insignia that were associated with the medieval period. Also, consider adding a texture to the armor by drawing in small lines that simulate the texture of metal. This will help to make the armor look more realistic and bring the entire piece together.

Drawing medieval armor can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. With a little bit of practice and patience, anyone can create an authentic looking piece of armor. After mastering the basics, the possibilities are endless. So don your armor and get ready to create your own medieval masterpiece!
