Colored Pencil Face Drawing: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’ve ever wanted to add a splash of color to your artwork, you’ve probably considered using colored pencils. Colored pencils have been around for decades and are a great way to add vibrancy and dimension to your drawings and sketches. With the right techniques, you can create stunning art with colored pencils, even on a face. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

Gather the Supplies You Need

The first step in creating a beautiful colored pencil face drawing is to gather all the supplies you need. You’ll need a set of colored pencils, a good quality eraser, a sharpener, and a few paper towels. You can choose any brand of colored pencils, but some of the most popular brands are Faber-Castell, Prismacolor, and Caran d’Ache. If you’re just starting out, it’s best to get a basic set of colored pencils that includes a variety of colors. That way, you can experiment with different shades and hues as you learn.

Choose a Photo to Work From

Once you’ve gathered all the supplies you need, it’s time to choose a photo to work from. It’s best to choose a photo that has good lighting, sharp focus, and a variety of colors. This will make it easier for you to capture the details of the face in your drawing. You can use a photo of a family member, friend, or even an actor or model. Once you’ve chosen a photo, you can begin to sketch the face.

Start Sketching the Face

Start by sketching the basic shape of the face with a light pencil. Focus on the eyes, nose, and mouth as these are the most important features. As you sketch, keep in mind that the face’s proportions should be roughly equal from top to bottom and from side to side. You can also use a ruler to make sure that the shape of the face is symmetrical. Once you’ve sketched out the face, you can begin to add the details.

Add the Details

Now it’s time to add the details to the face. Start by adding the eyes and eyebrows. Pay attention to the shape of the eyes and the angle of the eyebrows. The eyes should be symmetrical and the eyebrows should be slightly angled upward. Once you’ve added the eyes and eyebrows, you can move on to the nose and mouth. The nose and mouth should be in proportion to the rest of the face. Pay close attention to the shape of the mouth and the angle of the nose.

Color the Face

Now that you’ve added all the details, it’s time to add color. Start by adding the basic colors of the face. Choose a light color for the skin, a dark color for the eyes, and a medium color for the eyebrows. Then add the details such as freckles, moles, and blush. Use different shades of the same color to add dimension and depth to the face. For example, you can use lighter shades of the skin color for the cheeks and darker shades for the shadows.

Finish the Drawing

Once you’ve added all the colors, it’s time to finish the drawing. Use a blending tool or a paper towel to blend the colors together. This will give the drawing a more natural and realistic look. Once you’ve blended the colors, you can add highlights and shadows to give the face more depth. Finally, use an eraser to remove any smudges or mistakes.

Once you’ve finished your drawing, you can proudly display your artwork. Colored pencil face drawings can be a great way to express yourself and show off your talent. With a bit of practice, you can create beautiful and vibrant art that will make your friends and family proud. So why not give it a try?
