How to Draw Holly Leaves
The holly plant is an evergreen shrub that is known for its glossy, green leaves with spiny edges and its bright, red berries. The leaves of the holly plant have been used in Christmas decorations for centuries, and drawing them is a fun way to get into the holiday spirit. Whether you’re an experienced artist or have never picked up a pencil, you can learn to draw these distinctive leaves with a few simple steps.
Gather Your Supplies
You don’t need a lot of fancy supplies to learn how to draw holly leaves. All you’ll need is a pencil, eraser, and a sheet of paper. Of course, you can use any kind of paper you’d like, but a thicker paper will help you achieve better results if you’re using pencil. If you’d like to add color to your holly leaves, you can also use colored pencils or markers.
Draw the Outline
The first step to drawing a holly leaf is to draw the outline. Start by sketching a circle in the middle of your paper. This will be the center of the leaf. From there, draw two curved lines that come out from the center of the circle and connect at the end. This will form the basic shape of the holly leaf. You can make the leaf as big or as small as you’d like. Once you have the outline drawn, erase any extra lines.
Draw the Veins
Now that you have the outline drawn, it’s time to add the veins. Start by drawing a line down the center of the leaf, from the top to the bottom. Then draw two more lines coming out from the center line, one on each side. These should be curved lines that start near the top of the leaf and end near the bottom. You can then draw smaller lines coming out from each of these main veins to give the leaf a more detailed look.
Add the Finishing Touches
Once you have the veins drawn, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Start by adding the spiny edges to the leaf. Draw small, curved lines along the edge of the leaf to give it a more detailed look. You can also add details to the veins, such as small dots or lines. Finally, if you’d like to add color to your holly leaves, use colored pencils or markers to fill in the leaves. Remember to color lightly, as colored pencils or markers can be difficult to erase.
Practice Makes Perfect
Learning how to draw holly leaves takes time and practice. Don’t be discouraged if your first attempt doesn’t look perfect. Keep practicing and you’ll soon be drawing holly leaves like a pro. You can also look at pictures of real holly leaves to get a better idea of how they should look. With enough practice, you’ll be able to draw holly leaves that look just like the real thing.
