How to Draw Human Proportions
Drawing the human body accurately is a skill that requires patience, practice and an understanding of the fundamentals of basic proportions. Proportions are the relationship of the size and placement of body parts to each other. Knowing and understanding these proportions can help any artist draw a realistic and accurate human figure.
Study the Human Body
The first step in learning how to draw human proportions is to study the structure of the human body. Learn the names of the various body parts and understand their relationship to each other. This can be done best by studying anatomy books and observing the body either in real life or in photographs. By understanding the anatomy of the human body, it is possible to accurately draw the proportions of any figure.
Identify Major Proportions
The human body can be divided into several major proportions. The head, for example, is about one-eighth the total height of the figure. The arms are about half the length of the torso, and the legs are about seven-eighths the length of the torso. When drawing the human figure, these basic proportions should be taken into consideration.
Divide the Body into Parts
Once the major proportions have been established, the figure can be divided into smaller parts. The torso can be divided into eight equal parts with four parts above the waist and four below. The head can be divided into four parts, and the legs can be divided into five parts. By dividing the body into parts, it becomes easier to draw the figure accurately and in proportion.
Draw the Proportions
Once the proportions of the figure have been established and the parts have been divided, the artist can begin to draw the figure. Begin with the head and draw a circle that is one-eighth the total height of the figure. Next, draw the torso, which should be four parts above the waist and four below. Add the arms and legs, which should be about half and seven-eighths the length of the torso respectively.
Measure and Adjust
After the basic proportions have been drawn, it is important to measure the figure and adjust it if necessary. Measure the length of the arms and legs and the distance between the body parts. Adjust the figure as needed and draw the details of the body. It is important to take the time to measure and adjust the figure in order to draw an accurate and realistic human figure.
Practice
Practice is the key to learning how to draw human proportions accurately. Regular practice will help the artist learn how to draw the figure more quickly and accurately. Drawing from photographs and real life models can help the artist become more familiar with the human body and help them to draw more realistically. With patience and practice, it is possible to draw the human body in proportion.
