How to Draw Railroad Tracks

Drawing railroad tracks is a simple process that requires little more than a few basic art supplies, a good eye and some patience. With a little practice, anyone can create realistic railroad tracks, from the smallest model train set to the largest outdoor display. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you draw your own railroad tracks.

Step 1: Choose Your Track Type

The first step to drawing railroad tracks is to determine the type of track you wish to create. There are a variety of types, such as single track, double track and trestle. Single track is a single line of tracks, while double track consists of two parallel lines of tracks. Trestle tracks are elevated and supported by cross-braces and have a unique look.

Step 2: Gather Supplies

The supplies you need to draw railroad tracks depend on the type of track you are creating. For single or double track, you will need a sheet of paper, a pencil, a ruler and a pair of compasses. If you are creating a trestle track, you will need additional supplies, such as a protractor and a pair of dividers.

Step 3: Draw the Track Bed

Once you have the supplies you need, you can begin drawing the track bed. For single or double track, you will need to draw two parallel lines, which should be spaced at least 1/8 of an inch apart. If you are creating a trestle track, you will need to draw four parallel lines, each with a different angle. Make sure to draw each line with a ruler and a pencil so that they are even.

Step 4: Create the Rails

Once the track bed is drawn, you can begin drawing the rails. For single and double track, use the compasses to draw two parallel lines that begin at the track bed and extend outwards. For trestle track, use the protractor to draw four parallel lines that begin at the track bed and extend outwards. Make sure to draw each line with a ruler and a pencil so that they are even.

Step 5: Draw the Cross Ties

The next step is to draw the cross ties. For single and double track, use the compasses to draw two small rectangles in between the two parallel lines. For trestle track, use the dividers to draw four small rectangles in between the four parallel lines. Make sure to draw each rectangle with a ruler and a pencil so that they are even.

Step 6: Add the Details

Now that you have drawn the basic structure of the railroad tracks, you can add the finishing touches. For single and double track, you can draw small circles at each end of the rails. For trestle track, you can draw small rectangles at each end of the rails. Make sure to draw each detail with a ruler and a pencil so that they are even.

Step 7: Erase Unnecessary Lines

The last step is to erase any unnecessary lines. For single and double track, you will need to erase the two parallel lines that make up the track bed. For trestle track, you will need to erase the four parallel lines that make up the track bed. Once this is done, your railroad tracks are complete!

Drawing realistic railroad tracks can be a fun and rewarding experience. With a few basic supplies, a good eye and some patience, anyone can create realistic railroad tracks. Just follow the steps outlined above and you will be well on your way to creating beautiful railroad tracks.
